Going renewable

‘Going renewable’ aims at raising awareness about the issues of global warming and the importance of developing the use of renewable energy sources, not only at national level, but also in every individual’s daily activities. It encourages young students at the St Ignatius College to think of creative
and innovative solutions to apply renewable energy in small daily actions through the development of individual school projects. Through the project, young students have the opportunity to meet with scientists dealing with
renewable sources of energy and gather a deeper understanding of the issues at stake as well as the most efficient ways to exploit these resources. Interaction with teachers and parents, during the creative phase of the process, is also encouraged to ensure maximum impact of the knowledge
students have acquired.

Gifted and Talented Activities

The Gifted and Talented (G & T) series of activities are aimed at students attending the final two years of compulsory school. Each activity deals either with a mathematical topic that students do not encounter in the school syllabus or it deals with familiar topics in greater depth. Topics include prime numbers, secret codes, Fibonacci numbers and Pascal's triangle. Another characteristic of the G & T activities is that they encourage students to work in groups in investigative type activities.

Mathematics Project Competition

This is a mathematics competition that is open to students aged 13 to 15 years. The students are to choose a mathematical topic and carry out research. The topic that they can choose from are mostly topics that the students do not normally cover in the classroom. The students will have to then be creative and come up with a number of charts, a powerpoint presentation or else construct a 3-D model. Each school will have to present the best five entries. These entries will then be judged by a team of experts. The top ten placed teams will need to explain what they learnt from the project and how they constructed it. This will give them an opportunity to verbalise what they have learnt. The first three winning teams will be awarded a prize and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. It is hoped that through collaborative work, the students will learn to work in groups and independently of their teachers.

Academy of Invention

To celebrate the European Union’s Year of Creativity and Innovation, a consortium made up of a number of entities have come together to set-up and organise the Academy of Invention as a pilot project. The main objective is to create mechanisms that turn ideas into action. The project provides invention skills such as creative thinking skills, communication and business development skills to students studying ICT. The course consists of both theoretical and technical sessions. Students will be encouraged to work in teams and to develop ideas for new ICT services and devices. The basis of invention is, in fact, the rationalising and crystallising of various competences to create a new product or service.

PhotoSynth Competition

The competition is open to all primary and secondary school pupils. Participants can present their class projects utilising technology in teaching and learning through an easy-to-download software called PhotoSynth that can create an immersive 3-D environment of a photographed site or object. In addition the photographed artifact can be accompanied with notes and linked to a map where this can be physically located. It is an alternative way of capturing details of sites or objects that are part of our Maltese heritage and a creative way to meet curriculum objectives.

Theatre in Education

The aim of the Theatre in Education (TIE) is to deepen the students' understanding of subjects set on the time table and to help in the development of their social and self-awareness through theatrical presentations in which the students themselves are encouraged to interact. Learning becomes more interesting, accessible and fun. TIEs are targeted at Primary and Secondary school students aged between 6 and 16 years. The project is being carried out on a regular basis and, through the various themes presented, covers the drama school syllabus and focuses on educating students through theatre. Presentations are given by Drama Teachers, at the Drama Unit Theatre.
