The Ministry of Science and Innovation through the FECYT supports and coordinates on a state level the Week of Science 2009. The Week of Science is a European initiative stimulated by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) and coordinated by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) that is held on a state level for the eighth consecutive year. Thanks to the impetus of the Government, the implication of the Autonomous Communities and the participation of a large number of public and private organisations, the Week of Science has become the greater event for the wide public on science and technology that is held in Spain.
The 2009 edition will take place between 9 and 22 November and has programmed more than 2.0000 activities in the whole country. The aim of this initiative is to bring science closer to the general public of all ages, to encourage scientific knowledge and stimulate participation in scientific questions with astonishing, interesting and pleasant initiatives that will be held in museums, universities, research bodies or technology parks, among others. This year, 509 public and private organisations are participating in the event.
The present edition of the Week of Science is framed within the European Year of Creativity and Innovation and is also celebrating two scientific commemorations in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy and the Darwin Year.
Among the various activities that are developed during the Week of Science are exhibitions, visits, workshops, round tables, excursions, conferences, etc. bringing daily tasks and the most striking aspects of the organisations participating in the event to the general public.
The Programme for Scientific Culture and Innovation 2009, managed by the FECYT, with funds around 4.4 million €, has financed more than 90 projects disseminating scientific and innovative activities, participating in the Week of Science 2009.
