ORBIS PICTUS or The interactive exhibition ORBIS PICTUS is designed by the artist Petr Nikl. His script is based on his experience obtained during the interactive exhibition “The Garden of Imagination and Music” (Czech exhibition at Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan). The ORBIS PICTUS exhibition tries to develop imagination and fantasy by means of interactive instrumental objects. This instrumental set is focused mainly on the phenomenon of play – on the creative understanding of the world and oneself through one’s own senses.
The exhibition’s central object is the “Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart” – an organic musical assembly embedded in an inflated heart-shaped figure. The ideas of J. A. Comenius, the Czech humanist, are presented on a symbolic level. The instruments do not contain any electronic devices or computers, recorded music, or film loops. Everything is set into play on the spot by visitors, who can appreciate their artistic participation and mutual communication. The main topic and purpose of the exhibition is to create a communication channel across nationalities, social classes and religions. The project reflects the strength of creative desire for knowledge and is therefore closely tied to the message of J. A. Comenius.
